Pickleball Progress – London’s Court Considerations
The City of London is looking to install new pickleball courts but is facing a decision about where to locate them. The initial proposal was to convert the former basketball court area at Cowling Park, southeast of the playground.
However, some residents who live near the park have voiced concerns about this location.
Ciera Bierbaugh, who lives adjacent to Cowling Park, told City Council she worries the courts could attract an adult crowd and take away from the safety of the park for families and children’s activities. She also cited potential issues with limited parking and noise levels from pickleball games disturbing nearby homes.
Another nearby resident, Rob Treynor, shared similar noise concerns and noted possible drainage problems with the proposed Cowling Park site. Both he and Bierbaugh suggested considering Merri-Mac Park as an alternative location instead.
David Mars, who advocates for improvements at Merri-Mac Park, agreed that the site should be examined. While he enjoys Cowling Park, he believes investing in Merri-Mac could make it a destination for more of the community.
City officials acknowledged residents’ concerns but said Cowling Park was the initial choice due to existing amenities like restrooms, electricity, and security cameras near the proposed court area. They noted the surface there needs repair. Alternative locations studied had drawbacks in terms of utilities.
Councilmembers agreed more discussion is needed. Suggestions included adding permanent restrooms if Merri-Mac Park is chosen or using portable toilets temporarily. Funding from community groups could also help develop that site.
The City will discuss options at upcoming committee meetings in April before investing $115,000 to build the new courts. Residents’ input will help leaders weigh the pros and cons of each potential location.
