Pickleball Court Size Vs Badminton Court Size –
While pickleball and badminton are popular racquet sports enjoyed by many, the sizes of their designated playing courts differ significantly.
A standard pickleball court is much smaller than a regulation badminton court. A pickleball court measures just 20 feet by 44 feet, allowing for faster-paced games in a more confined space.
In contrast, a traditional badminton court is over twice as large at 13.40 meters or 44 feet, providing players with more room to maneuver and chase down shots.
Since I recently covered how to keep the ball low in pickleball on Paddle on my blog, itβs time to discuss Pickleball Court Size with badminton court size.
To understand how the two courts differ in detail, read till the end.
Pickleball Court Size Vs Badminton Court Size
Below is a detailed explanation of each.
Pickleball Court Size
The pickleball court you will play on has specific measurements. It is similar in size to a badminton doubles court. The length from sideline to sideline is 44 feet long, including the boundary lines. The width from baseline to baseline is 20 feet wide, including the lines.
The net positioned across the center of the court has a height of 36 inches measured at the sidelines. In the center of the net, the height is slightly lower at 34 inches. This drops just below your waist level, making the net easy to see over but not bounce shots under.
Within the court are marked areas on either side of the net called service courts for serving the ball. There is a 7-foot-deep non-volley zone directly in front of the net. This area is known as βthe kitchen.β Shots cannot be volleyed when your feet are inside this area.
Badminton Court Size
The size of a standard badminton court remains consistent for both singles and doubles matches. The length stays fixed at 13.40 meters or 44 feet. However, the width differs according to the event.
For singles play, the width expands to 5.18 meters or 17 feet across. Yet the width is pushed to 6.10 meters or 20 feet in doubles.
Your playing area splits in the middle. Each half provides 6.70 meters or 22 feet of space. Above you hangs a net at different heights. It sits 1.55 meters or 5 feet 1 inch at the edges. But the net dips slightly lower to 1.52 meters or 5 feet in the center.
There are two important lines near the net to follow for serves. The short line is 6.5 feet or 1.98 meters out. The long line is 2.36 feet or 0.72 meters from the back.
In singles, your serve must cross the short line. But in doubles, the long line tells you how close to the net you can be when serving. So, the doubles serve comes from closer up than singles.
Why Is Pickleball Gaining Mass Popularity?
Pickleball is gaining widespread popularity because it is accessible for all ages. You only need a little space or special equipment to enjoy the sport. The court is small, only about a quarter the size of a tennis court.Β
You only need a net set up in your backyard or local park. Plus, the balls are similar to wiffle balls and donβt fly as fast as tennis balls. This makes pickleball easy on your body, whether young or old. Itβs a lot less physically demanding than other racquet sports.
The low barrier to entry attracts many people. Families especially like that both kids and parents can play together. No one feels left out due to age or ability level.
Communities have taken notice as well. Many gyms and recreation centers now offer pickleball courts and equipment for public use. You donβt need previous athletic experience, either.
Pickleball welcomes all skill levels to enjoy light competition on the court. This broad appeal explains why its popularity keeps rising every year.
